Run For the Arts

Soon our students will be asking their friends and family (some will ask neighbors, too) to sponsor them as they participate in a "fun run" that directly benefits their experiences in the arts at Beverly Cleary School.  The Run for the Arts is scheduled for April 6th, with a make-up day (if it’s raining on 4/6) on April 13th.  Students run around the track at Grant.

Thanks to the participants and their sponsors, Beverly Cleary School has been able to provide different kinds of arts experiences for our students to reinforce the integration of the arts into their classroom curriculum.  Additionally, we have been able to provide extra curricular opportunities in the arts for our students.

Pizzicato Pizza Dough 4 Dollars Day

Pizzicato Pizza on 42nd Ave and Fremont is generously donating 20% of its sales to Beverly Cleary School on Tuesday, March 16th. There are three ways you can help earn money for our school just by ordering pizza on Dough 4 Dollars Day!

Pre-order your meal by Friday, March 12th.

In an effort to save paper, forms will not be sent home with your child. The menu can be downloaded here and order form can be downloaded here. You can also pick up a form in either office. Just return the form and a check made out to BEVERLY CLEARY PTA to the Pizzicato pizza box in either school's office. Then pick up your pizza dinner at child pick-up time on Tuesday, March 16th.

Or... Go to Pizzicato directly to pick up dinner on March 16th.

If you're not up for pizza that night, buy a gift certificate to use later and that 20% still goes toward our PTA funds.

Take a survey on high schools, transfer policy

How should Portland Public Schools select locations for its high schools? Share your opinion about this critical aspect of the ongoing High School System Design process, as well as the school district’s transfer policy, in this 14-question survey.  The survey will close on Friday, March 19 before spring break begins.

Stay informed about High School System Design by watching Channel 28. PPS is broadcasting related meetings – including a student gathering, school board discussion and board-sponsored community session – on a rotating basis. View schedule

Have these spring-like days gotten you thinking about your summer garden?

The eighth-graders are raising money for their trip to Washington, DC and one of their projects is a bedding plant sale.  Order forms (download here) are due in either office by April 9th and pick-up day is Saturday, May 8th, in time for Mother's Day!  Thank you for your support of our eighth-graders!

Safer Routes to School

Beverly Cleary School is a member of the Safer Routes to School (SR2S) program. SR2S encourages students and families to get to and from school in ways that reduce traffic, build strong bodies and clear minds, and provide a cleaner environment.

All second and fifth grade families recently received in the mail an order form from Safer Routes.  The order form serves as a fundraiser, earning our school $5 for each order form turned in!  If we mail all our forms back, BCS will get over $500!

The order form provides FREE resources for families to find fun ways to get around the city of Portland.  Options include Metro's terrific "Walk There" booklet, a beautiful pocket sized guide to many areas of our region with history, a walking map and ideas for an active outing with your family.  Or maybe you'd like a free bike bell, some information on your nearest bus route or a coupon for a bike helmet.

Choose something of interest and return that form!!  Go find it right now!  It's a super easy way to earn some money for our school.

BCS Parent Info Night Presentation Slides

We had a good turnout for our Beverly Cleary School Parent Information Night.  Those in attendance learned more about BCS and K-8 choices for mid-level students.

The following topics were discussed:

  • Courses
  • A typical day for a mid-level student
  • Why choose a K-8 over a middle school
  • What to expect from your mid-level student
  • Questions/concerns

If you weren't able to attend, or if you may have missed a topic or two, click here to open/download the presentation (PDF file) from that evening.

How will HS redesign affect next year's freshmen?

Families of students who are entering high school next year may have specific questions and concerns about how High School System Design will affect them.  PPS staff have complied a list of questions and answers to help with this transition.

Kindergarten Round-Up

Attention families of the Class of 2023!  We are pleased to announce our 2010-2011 Kindergarten Round-up for children turning five on or before September 1, 2010.  If so, you are invited to our 2010-11 Kindergarten Round-Up. This is a great opportunity to prepare you and your child for the new school year--meet the Principal, Assistant Principal and teachers and learn about our Kindergarten program.

How to register for Kindergarten

Kindergarten Round-up for Beverly Cleary School is on Thursday, February 18 from 9-10 AM and again in the evening from 6:30-7:30 PM on the Hollyrood campus (3560 NE Hollyrood Court, 503-916-6766). Because of space constraints and fire code restriction, Kindergarten Round-up is for adults only.

What do you dream for your child?

What do you look at every day and take for granted...  What if you looked at it up close?  What if you look at just part of it?  What if you looked up at it from way down low?  What if you looked at its shadow?
