What is PTA?

Oct 12, 2008

The Parent Teacher Association is a volunteer organization which strives to provide a sense of extended community and to support the school, teachers, parents and each individual child. PTA hopes that when each child comes to school they have an equal opportunity to be successful learners.  The BCS PTA sponsors community events during the year and has many year-long projects including the PTA Reading Challenge, Teacher Appreciation Week, a school-wide telephone directory and this website.  PTA also provides volunteer support for lunch and recess duty, room parents, garden support and special events.

PTA + VOLUNTEERS = ALL ADDITIONAL SUPPORT AND FUNDS FOR BEVERLY CLEARY SCHOOL

The PTA board meets monthly and general membership meetings are held bi-monthly.

Our fundraising activities: PTA funds its programs through various school-based activities. The main fundraisers include the selling of scrip and magazine subscriptions (year-long), McMenamins Friends and Family Night (October), our annual fall festival, Spook-A-Rama (October), Pizzicato Pizza nights (January and March) and our school-wide rummage sale (June).  Periodically, PTA will have other fundraising events for specific purchases.

PTA funds are critical to supplement the ever-shrinking PPS budgets. Every year teachers can apply for PTA grants to fund their classroom requests in the fall and spring. Take a look at this list of some of the items we’ve been able to provide to our school!

  • Math and Language Arts curricula and games to help make learning fun and exciting
  • Microphones and amplification systems to improve classroom communication
  • Microscopes and electron scales for science classes
  • Computers and flip cameras for our middle school media class
  • Garden supplies to build and maintain our educational gardens
  • Costumes and props for school plays
  • Art and music supplies to inspire creativity
  • Books –Fiction! Non-fiction! Instructional! You name it!

Volunteering: PTA organizes many of the volunteers who help staff the school.  You can volunteer to help in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, office, and/or in the garden. Volunteers are also needed for all fundraising activities and the monthly events, authors' tea, reading challenge or special events.  Can't get to school, but still want to help? There are needs for parents to do design work, sign making and computer help as well.  Sign-up opportunities are available year-round.
